The Five Main Autonomous Regions of China are Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the North-East, North- and North-West, Tibet Autonomous Region in the South-West and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the South.

There are however plenty of ethnic minority area's and communities in the remaining Provinces of China.

The most well-known of Provinces with Ethnic Minority populations are Heilongjiang Province of (former) Manchuria in the North-East, Gansu Province and Qinghai Province in the North-West and the West and further Yunnan Province in South China with no less than 24 Ethnic Minority Groups. Other Provinces with substantial Minority Communities are Jilin Province and Liaoning Province in Manchuria with Korean (Chaoxian), Manchu and Mongolian Minority Communities, Qinghai Province which includes parts of (former East) Tibet, Sichuan Province with a large (Eastern) Tibetan Population, Hunan Province, Hainan Dao Island Province, Jiangxi Province, Guizhou Province with 49 out of all 55 minority groups, Guangdong Province, Zhejiang Province and Fujian Province.

The First Ethnic Autonomous Communities to be recognized by the Central Government of The Peoples Republic of China were Inner-Mongolia Autonomous Region (established in early 1949 AD before the actual proclamation of State) and Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province of North-East China.
