Population: The Total Urban Population of Baotou City is around 2 million 500 thousand with an additional 1 Million 520 thousand living in the rural area's of the City Prefecture. The Bayan Obo Mining District, albeit minute is one of the most important parts of the Baotou Prefecture.

Public Transport in Baotou
There are two Train Stations in Baotou City that matter to the tourist and traveler. The first of these is the Main Train Station of Baotou situated in the western districts of Town.
The second important train station is the Baotou Eastern Railway Station which is located due East of the City Center of Baotou and due north of the Airport.
Last: Wanshiquan Train Station.
Baotou has several Railroad Stations as well as a National Airport.

During the Russian Invasion of North China, just before the Japanese collapse in world war 2, large parts of North China were attacked and taken by Russian Troops. Although the main objective of the offensive was the taking of Manchuria with its mineral riches and heavy industrial base, the Russians advanced over a far wider front. The main city on the far western end of the russian advance was the strategically important city of Baotou. The City lay at the end of a strategic railway and gave access to the Yellow River as well. Equally important, the possesion of this strategic point gave the Russians the opportunity to communciate directly with Mao Zedong and the party headquarters in Yan′An just to the south and across the river in North Shaanxi Province. Hence, in the spring of 1945 AD the city saw the rare event of Russian Para-troops descending from the Sky to take control of Baotou and the regions.
