Uvs Province or Uvs Aimag is one of the North-Western Provinces of the Republic of Mongolia. It has a long 634 kilometer border with the Russian Federation in the North. Neighboring Provinces (Aimags) and Nations are in clockwise direction - Bayan Olgiy Aimag in the West and South-West, the Russian federation in the North, Dzavkan Aimag in the East and South-East and finally Khövd Aimag in the South. Uvs Province is named after its largest Lake, the Uvs Nur (Увс нуур) or Nuur.
The Topography of Uvs Province can general be seen as follows - The Capital City of Ulaangom lies in the western half of the Province at some distance south-west of the Uvs Lake, Mongolia’s biggest Lake. The City of Ulaangom, a town of some 23000 people at best, is surrounded by high mountains to its south-west, west en north-west. Some 60% of the total surface area of the province is classified as of a mountainous nature and climate, whereas the other 40%, mainly the eastern half of the province, is far less fertile and counted as belonging to the semi-desert regions of the giant Gobi Desert of Mongolia and China.

The Capital City of Uvs Aimag is Ulaangom, a small city -basicly but a town- of only 22.300 citizens (2008 Census) located some 26 kilometers from Uvs Nuur and at a 120 kilometers from the Russian Border. Ulaangom lies at an altitude of 931 meters (3054 Ft.) above sea level.
The population of Uvs Aimag is made up for around 28.9% bu the citizens of Ulaangom alone. The town itself is divided into two suburban areas named Chandmani "Чандмань" and Uliasny Khev "Улиасны Хэв".
A Consulate of Tuva Republic of Russia is located in Ulaangom, and a Representative Office of Uvs Province in Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva.
After the revolution in 1921 in Mongolia, on November 21, 1925 the government founded the Chandmani Uulyn Aimag (Чандмань уулын аймаг, Jewel Mountain Province). This province included the whole western part of the country and thus included territories that are part of today's Uvs, Khovd and Bayan-Ölgii Aimags. In 1931 this large and sparsely populated territory of Chandmani Uulyn Aimag aimag was split up into the Khovd and Dörvöd aimags, reflecting the ethnic backgrounds of the inhabitants of both regions. Dörvöd aimag (Дөрвөд аймаг) was then renamed to Uvs aimag in 1933 AD, leaving the current administrative division.

Altaic people live in the province throughout history. In 1931 when the Aimag was originally founded it was named Dörvöd reflecting the tribal variation or dialect of the Mongol Language in this region of West Mongolia.
The Dörbet (or Dorbet or Durvud) originally were the fourth branch of the tribal alliance which established itself as the Dungar Khanate in the 16th century. As one of the most populous nations among the Dzungar the Dörbet howevered suffered greatly in the deafeat of their Khanate at the hands of more powerful adversaries. Scattered and moving westward thereafter they currently mainly reside in western Mongolia.

On the other end of the spectrum however Uvs Aimag also has its arid desert regions, in particular the Buurug sand, which is known as the tallest and largest sand dune of Mongolia entire. In total the Buurug Sands occupy some 4,000 sq. km. of the aimag's territory still but a small fraction of the enormous surface area of this province. Naturally, the staggering sand dunes, usually going well over a 100 meters in height are among the popular sights of Uvs Aimag.
Us Aimag is also home to the largest fresh water lake within Mongolia, the renowned and remote Uvs Nuur. Due to the presence of the Lake Uuvs, Uvs Aimag is an important stop over point for migratory birds and a popular nesting ground. Conveniently located just 26 kilometers from the lake the Capital City, really but a town, Ulaangom, is a popular point from where to stage excursions to the Lake and roundabout tours of the region.
Ranked number one among the tourist destinations and scenic sights of Uvs Province is the largest fresh water lake in Mongolia, the Uvs Nuur. Next in line are the Buurug Sands.
