First among the tourist attractions and worthwhile sites to visit in Dandong is the Yalu River Bridge, better known as the Dandong Yalu River Sino-Soviet Friendship Bridge. Remains of the original bridge, bombed several times and destroyed during the Korean War (June 1950 - July 1953 - ending in Armastice) can be seen standing just south of the current bridge. The main tourist and business district of Dandong (Shangmao Luyouqu) is conveniently lined up along the riverfront of the Yalu River due south and some north of the Yalu River Bridge. Visitors can take a boat ride on the Yalu River starting from docking points both south- and north of the bridge.
The main shopping district can be found in the adjacent streets between the river and the main train station. Other attractions are the local Korean War Museum known as the "Museum to commemorate U.S. Agression.
Outside of the City the most popular attraction is the Tiger Mountain Great Wall of China, which is situated some 25 kilomters due north of the city smack on the border and overlooking the Yalu River as well as swaths of rural North Korea (D.P.R.K.). Far less known and visited tourist destination are the local mountain of Fenghuang Shan (in Fengcheng City) at a distance of some 50 kilometers due north-west of Dandong City, the Dagushan Scenic Area of Donggang (Town and District) and the Shuifeng hydro-electric dam (Sup'Ung Lake Dam), a joint Chinese-Korean project found in Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County.

Dandong has a Railroad Station as well as a National Airport. Dandong is a port city connected by railroad to the provincial Capital of Shenyang in the West, and to Sinuiju in North Korea immediatly due East across the Yalu River. Railroads connect via Sinuiju to Pyongyang, the Capital of North Korea. For travel to North Korea (D.P.R.K.) strict VIsa and other rules apply.
Dandong International Airport is located due South South-West of Dandong City.
In the year 1876 A.D. during the Qing Dynasty (1644 A.D. - 1911 A.D.) the Dandong region was given the name of Andong County (安東縣), which means "Pacifying the East". The Town was also known as Antung.
Subsequently, in 1894 the city of Dandong was occupied by Japanese Troops after the start of the first Sino-Japanese War.
During the Manchukuo era, when Manchuria was re-created as a Japanese Puppet State, Dandong was the capital of Andong Province, one of the fourteen provinces established by Manchukuo.
Then, in 1907, it was opened as an international treaty port.
The City of Dandong, meaning "Red East", adopted its present name on January 20, 1965, ostensabily to avoid connotation of its previous name, which was considered imperialistic by some.
Recently, the city has been gaining influence in this region of China because of its market with North Korea and the government’s future plans to develop the city into a special “Border Economic Cooperation Zone” for export and import, in order to expand the country’s ability to conduct trade.
After North Korea's first testing of a nuclear device (bomb) in the year 2006, China has started building a border fence on its side of the river Yalu, but only due North of the City of Dandong. One can find the fence when visiting the Great Wall of China at Tiger Mountain ( Hu Shan), which overlooks the Yalu River at a location some ways north of Dandong City.

The Main Train Station of Dandong City stands but 500 meters due North-West of the Yalu River (Yalu Jiang) and the Dandong-Sinuiju Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge. It is also just around 500 meters away from the Main Museum in the City, the "Museum to Commemorate U.S. Agression".
