Map of China during the Rule of the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 221 AD) with the main trading roads of the Empire, the Silk Road and location of Huixian marked.
After running off the Qinghai Plateaux of East Tibet and passing into Gansu Province of the Peoples Republic of China, the Yellow River cuts through the Yongjing County on its way to the provincial Capital of Lanzhou. The Yongning county is home to the Liujia Gorge hydro-electric dam of the the Yellow River and the minor but older dam of the Yanguo Gorge.
LIUJIA GORGE AND HYDRO-ELECTRIC DAM:
The Liujia Gorge Dam was completed in 1974 AD becoming the first large scale high altitude Dam on the Yellow River. Much taller than its predecessor at Yanguoxia, it measures 174 meters in height and runs for 800 meters across the gorge of the Yellow River. A cornerstone of recent economic development of the city of Lanzhou and the wider region it houses 5 massive power generation units.
YANGUO GORGE DAM:
The Yanguoxia Dam was constructed between 1958 and 1961 and as such is a relic of the historic period of the Great Leap Forward launched by Chairman Mao Zedong in 1958 AD. Built for a large part without the use of machinery by slave laborers and political prisoners (many from Tibet) it survives to this day as a solemn reminder of the sacrfices made throughout the Mao Zedong Era. The dam measures but a modest 57-meters in height but nevertheless is worth a visit.
