The National Museum of China was untill recently known as the combined Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of the Revolution. In the past it was a secluded place where foreign visitors had to make an appointment that was never truely finalyzed. Inside the virtues of Communism were exhalted and Leaders of the Revolution such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and others deitified. During the early years of the current 21st Century the Museum saw a drastic overhaul and renaming to the current Title as the National Museum of China at TiananMen Square. Re-opened since 2003 AD the entire building and exhibitions have seen such huge numbers of visitors as well as new specimens of historic finds to preserve and then display, the Museum is already expanding. In the coming 3 years the National Museum will retain it's classical front and exterior, but will be expanded with some modern features that will turn the new enlarged building in Tune with the demands of modern times, allowing for more and better storage space for artifacts, larger exhibitions and no doubt a steadily growing number of visitors. Located along the Western and Eastern Flanks of the Square of Heavenly Peace stand two gargantuan buildings. These two Grandiose Monuments are The Great Hall of the Peoples, in the West and the National Museum on the Eastern Flank.
From North to South, the Flanks of the Square of Heavenly Peace measure 880 meters.
On the Western Flank of the Square of Heavenly Peace, 356 meters of these are taken up by the Great Hall of the People. The Great Hall is located in the North Section of the West Flank and bordered in the South by Great Hall of the Peoples West Street at the Western End of which recently arose the National Theatre. To the South of this street stands the historic Bank of China building, south of which is another road, after which follows a space where untill recently only stood some small shops catering to Tourists. In the far South-West corner of The Square of Heavenly Peace reconstructions are ongoing, but until November 2007 AD, it was the location of a Tour Bus Terminal.
Recently renovated, the "Great Hall" (2007) is China's People's Democratic Parliament (one party system) and one of the Main Components in the Architectural and Propaganda Masterpiece of Greater Tian'AnMen Square. Together with it's near twin, the former Museum of the Revolution and the Museum Of Chinese History, the The Great Hall of the People architecturally functions as a solid-looking counter balance to the large Empty Space of this Largest Square in the World, and acts to counter-balance the Monuments of the Central Line.
The grandure and sheer size of both buildings seems envelop the visitor in an awareness of Power and Possibility, while free to Move among the various Monuments, gigantic by themselves, inside the spacious square.

The Square of Heavenly Peace is located at the very Center of the City of Beijing, just South of The Palace Museum.
The Square can be accessed from all directions, North-South and West through several pathways and is reachable by Bus, Metro/Subway, Car or Taxi, Rickshaw or Bicycle and on Foot. Some daring Tourist have even been spotted on Skates, but this is hardly advisable with current traffic levels.
The Only Thing to Remember is that no vehicles are alllowed to stop, drop off passengers or park immediately at TiananMen Square, TianAnMen Gate, or the two flanks formed by the Great Hall and the National Museum. There are no Bus Stops at the Square nor a Subway Station. In other words - you can get there, but you can't get off.
The Easiest Road to The Square of Heavenly Peace
therefor leads by Subway. Get off conveniently near the Square by traveling on the Central Red Line to TiananMen East- or West-Stations, or by the Circular Blue line to end up at QianMen Station, on the very southern Tip of TiananMen Square.

The Great Hall of the People is a gargantuan Palace of Politics and the historic power center of Communist China's State Machinery functioning as the National Parliament.
It was constructed in the Late 1950's, astoundingly in the short space of only 10 months. All work for the construction was done by Volunteers, who worked hard to see the huge building completed in 1959 AD in Time for the Celebrations of the 10Th Anniversary of the establishment of The Peoples Republic of China.
Reflecting the Optimism and Great Ambitions of the Young and New State at the Time, the resulting building measures a staggering 356 meters in length and 206.5 meters in width, with the Front Entrance annex Gate in the center of the building peaking at 46.5 meters.
With the opening of "The Great Hall", the new Nation under the Leadership of the Communist Party, had it's very own modern parliament where the many representatives of the People were to gather and debate. The Huge Parliament Building has seen many intesting developments, critical debates and heated scenes since.
Of the 880 Meters of the Eastern Flank of the Square of Heavenly Peace, 313 Meters are taken up by the National Museum (formerly The Museum of the Revolution and the Museum of Chinese History).
The Western Flank starts in the North with the exits of the pedestrian walkway passing underneath Eternal Peace Avenue from the North Side and Tai Miao Gate to the North
Entrance is through the South Side of The Great Hall, down a small Path leading along the Front to the Main Stairs and Entrance into the Giant Structure.
Inside the East and Main Entrance into the Great Hall of The Peoples, guided Tours start regularly, depending upon if enough people have gathered to form a group.
Tours are given in various languages, so follow the group that befits you most.

Next heading south along the Eastern Flank one comes to a set of stairs. The Stairs lead up to DongJiaoMin Xiang, or Formerly the West Legations Street, which was one of the main streets in the Colonial Area Foreign Bastion of the Beijing Legations of it's Time. After visiting the Square, a browse around the Foreign legations Quarter of Beijing is one of the worthy options.

Currently expanding with a new and modern styled Facade combined with it's Historic Front at TiananMen Square, the National Museum is the newly blossoming National Collection of Cultural and Historical Treasures, the Nation's archeological depository filled with the 5000 Years of Chinese Civilization and substantial Prehistory.
Until recently, the Front of the National Museum on the Square of Heavenly Peace also was the location of the Official (and 1st) Olympic Countdown Clock. An Electronic Clock set on the top of the Stairs of the Museum, which counted down to the Opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, set for 8 Minutes past 8, on the Evening of August the 8Th of the year 2008 AD. The Clock, now removed, became one of the smaller symbols of China's enthusiasm the host this world event.

The Next Monument of The Square of Heavenly Peace stands on the Opposite Side of The Great Hall of The People in the East. This the former building of The Museum of the Revolution and the Museum of Chinese History, that has recently been remolded into the Modern National Museum.
Historically, the Museum was one of the Major Elements of the Communist Propaganda Showcase that the Square of Heavenly Peace was in it's heydays of the Post-Revolution. For a long time under strict Control of the Ministry of Information (I.e. The propaganda Office), the entire exhibition space was dedicated to the various stages of the "Socialist Revolution in China" explained along fundamentalist Marxist-Leninist Lines of thought.
This is where the fundamentals of the Parties versions of Historic Events were glorified and displayed as important lessons for the common People.
Interestingly, in the Cold War Past and far into the 1980's the Museum was off-limits to Foreigners, who had to ask for express permission for entrance in written form. During the 1990's the Museum was usually closed, and during the intervals only relatively small historic exhibits were displayed.
In 2003 AD, the Old Museums and their out-dated Exhibitions on Socialism and China were done away with, introducing the National Museum, an organization looking to an ambitious Future.
