This Geographic Map of Datong's City Center shows the entire Area of the Old City of Datong with its (earthen) City Walls and surrounding area's of the Modern City of Datong constructed after 1949 AD.
This Map includes the location of (almost) all major tourist sites and historic landmarks of the Old City of Datong, but does not represent the far wider modern city which extends far beyond this map.
The Old City itself lies South (and somewhat East) of the New City of Datong.
About the Map: As a First Note: the Drum Tower does not stand at the Center of the Map and Old City. The "Central Square" of the City is a non-distinct intersection that seems only recognizable by its Foreign Language Bookstore, one of the two in the City. From here DaXi Street leads West (Xi=West) where the other Bookstore is located at Renmin (Peoples) Square down Daxi Jie, just outside the here removed City Walls inside the New City. Here the main bus terminal and main post office of the City can also be found.
The Main Trainstation of Datong lies due North of Peoples Square and Park, some 3 kilometers from the Old Walled City, where there are two railway stations and a giant railway Yard named the Datong Goods Yard.
The Drum Tower, once at the heart of the Old City of Datong, stands one block due South of Central Intersection Square. Go from the Drum Tower (GuLou') South along DaNan jie = (The) South Street to find ancient Shan Hua Monastery just inside the (Former) South Gate and Wall. The City Walls were crumbling and dilapidated, but are now being reconstructed ! A new Temple, the Temple of Literature has been added to the City Center as well.
