A Full Google Earth Supported Map of Fugu County North Sections at Jianshanzi by Google.com.
This Map focusses on the top northern parts of Fugu County on Hequ Town in Yulin Prefecture of Shaanxi Province. There are 3 seperate area's in Fugu County where (sparse) remains of the Great Wall and associated structures can be found. Jianshanzi along the Yellow River is the northernmost of these. A few ruined beacon towers overlook the river. On the opposite bank much stand larger fortifications, from which a layer of the Great Wall extends eastward towards Beijing. Not surprisingly, in ancient times this was a reasonable point to try and traverse the river. In the past there was a boat ferry, today a bridge spans the Yellow River giving easy access to both banks of the river. No (continuous) wall seems to extend westward into Shaanxi Province probably due to the arid and rugged mountainous terrain and the existence of the Huangpu river which flows in a north-south direction just west of Fugu

The next and in fact northernmost main station of the Great Wall of China can be found at Shenmu, Shenmu County of Yulin Prefecture from where the main line of the Great Wall starts to lead to Yulin Fortress in central Shaanxi Province. From there it led further southwestward. The Shenmu Great Wall was most exposed to threats from the north and west hence it faces that direction. From Shenmu the Wall runs southward continously, backed by the steep and sharp edged mountains of central Shaanxi Province. Shenmu itself was and is a well fortified walled town worth visiting. Outside of town one can attempt a hike along one of the ruined sections between Shenmu and Yulin City.

Apart from the main line of the singular layer of the Great Wall of China running from Shenmu in the north to Yulin in central Shaanxi Province, there is a short "doubled layer" inside the main line. This short section disects from the main line north of the historic county town of Gaojiapu and continues from there to join with the city walls of this small but strategic town. Although no line of the wall can be traced south of the town, supposedly there was a line of defense rejoining with the main line of the wall (somewhere between Gaojiapu and Yulin Fortress). Help scrutinize the area and try to locate and identify more ruins for us?
